With less than a week to go for London Olympics, India looks to do best in eons of ages. India's chances lies best in the field of Archery, Badminton, Boxing , Tennis, Wretling, Shooting and not to be forgotten hockey.
Moreover as the buzz and performance goes , our women tend to have more mettle this time than our men. People like Mary Kom , Deepika Kumari, Saina and Sania, Jwala Gutta and Chanu have enough in them to get us our best Olympic haul. Of these women most of them have crossed many a odds to be where they are right now. States like Manipur , Nagaland and Jharkhand have enormous stories to convey about making of these athletes. A Deepika had to face the wrath of her parents at a tender adoloscent age but her resolve brought her where she is standing today (curretly world number 1) and we dont mind her bow carrying the loads of billion and most importantly thousands of teenage tribal girls of her state.
Everyone knows how Yuvraj Singh was scolded by his dad when he brought trophy of another discipline of sports he excelled at as his dad wanted him to think nothing and cricket but rarely anyone discusses a Mary Kom was scolded by her parents when she won national level boxing competition. This lady is only boxer to win medals each time she has been into The World Boxing Championship. Such is her talent that she took sabbatical for two years for her kids came back and again did wonders. She is ranked number 4.
Another lady is Geeta Phogat the lone wrestler from India and our stupendous medal hope. This lady used to wrestle with men as there were not enough women wrestler to practice with. I also have hopes from Chanu a wonderful weightlifter who has been into many a odds to be in the best of business.
But there could have been many other successful stories but for the apathy of Governemnt and our very own attitude towards woman. The Indian relay team if were handled properly would have been our best bet for the Olympics track and field. Instead of sympathy (these ladies were found to be postive in drug test ), they were treated like sinners and were kicked out of academy. Not many of these people from small states know whats harmful and whats restricted. they have only the passion and guile and would need support.
Irony is when they themselves fight with their parents to let them do what they want to, how much can be expected from others. They are convinced only when told the girls can get Government job or with a good public sector based on their sports achievements. (I myself have convinced one of the family i knew in Jharkhand where they hated there daughter excelling in sports) Another attitude problem is way we look at woman in track suits. They cant train good and be free as they know all the eyes are looking at them and the gaze is fullof lust.
On a positive note I strongly feel all these women have enough charcter in them to beat the best. Encouraging signs have come from government too though lot more is desired. Finally will keep updating whatever happens in Olympics and would like others to make it a social buzz more than anything else in weeks to come. All the best India. And all the best these ladies..
