Of The Tie and that Ball Never Bowled

After long I am writing about cricket....Not much joy recently since that WC win. However the match played yesterday brought some interesting facts and these ifs and buts is what make cricket such a wonderful sports. For every match that ends, brings lots of trivia and nostalgia around it. Lets have a look at some of the interesting facts: facts which makes this match aptly a Tie...

1. India and Srilanka scored 15 fours.
2. Both the teams hit two sixes.
3. The dot ball played was 166:163 (Sri Lanka:India)
4. Both the teams lost 9 wickets.
5. Both teams bowled two maiden over each.
6. Both team gave away 8 extras.
7. Both team lost their first three wickets under the score of 100.
8. Both team lost their 9th wicket on 49.5 over , both run outs.

These are too much a similarity and statistical delight.

Having said that controversy also evolved around one missing ball. Skeptics may say it could have gone either ways. However that ball brought around 11 results. And only one could have served Sri Lanka, one would have made no effect and all other 9 favouring India. There could have been some outcomes where 1 to 6 runs could have been scored. One outcome of a dot ball. There could have been two instances where either a no ball or a wide would have been bowled and there could have been a dismissal. Now of all these scenario only one favors Sri Lanka.

Whatever it was this was a match to watch.

Death Sentence...

Recently there was an article in Hindu http://orwell.ru/library/articles/hanging/english/e_hanging This article has  come up on the wake of giving mercy to the killers of Rajiv Gandhi. There has been huge row about forgiving those involved in it. It has been twenty years since Mr Gandhi died and more than 70 years since Mr Orwell wrote the article. Letting these people off the crime they did, seems to be logical amongst various set of society who thinks letting go the criminals is a way forward for an emerging society. Death sentence looks medieval or cruel.  But was the crime (murder) committed a civilized step ? A society that sentences killers to nothing worse than prison -- no matter how depraved the killing or how innocent the victim -- is a society that doesn't *really* think murder is so terrible.  When a killer is hanged till death, society is condemning his crime with a seriousness and intensity that no other punishment achieves. I still remember as a child th...
