Mard se Harischandrachi Factory tak

Was thinking of updating my profile and wanted to add list of my favorite movies. I must admit I am an ardent movie buff. Listing would have been easier but to tag a few movies as the best and adding etc would have been unfair to the movies. So I would go with a selected few movies which has left a deep impact on me. The list is random.

1. Antaheen: Had gone to Calcutta and picked up the vcd of Antaheen as heard rave reviews about the director of movie plus it had Sharmila Tagore, Aparna Sen and Rahul Bose. The movie is a delight in itself and the music was simply majestic. The film, later on won National Award as best film and for its music. A must see to fall in love with Calcutta.

2.Parakh: This is a Bimal Roy film which I would consider most humorous and satirical of all. Sadhna, san her trademark hair cut looks and acts beautifully but its Motilal who stands out as the postmaster's help

3. The Usual Suspect : Most amazing pulp noir I have seen. Has best script and the most intriguing climax. Class act by Kevin Spacey.

4. Gulaal: For its sheer poetry. For Piyush Mishra, Abhimanyu Singh , Kay Kay Menon and Anurag Kashyap. For its songs and rendition of Rashmirathi by Piyush Mishra. Remeber the dialogues frame by frame by Ransa and Kay Kay Menon.

5.Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro: There are few films which every one in our age group (adding+ and - 5  years with my age to form the group) likes and this would be one of them along with Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. Kundan Shah gave us the best known black comedy of India. I firmly believe everyone in this age group who likes this movie would have loved the Mahabharata scene. Pity Kundan Shah did not follow up with good movies after JBDY and KHKN .

6. Kagaz Ke Phool : Guru Dutt created magic in Pyasa and people love watching pyasa more than watching Kagaz ke Phool. But I started admiring a lot about movement of camera and the use of sets after I watched this movie . There is one scene where Guru Dutt and Wahida Rahman are talking about there relation. The shot is a close up just letting us watch their faces. After there conversation gets over, we see the camera changing to take the group photograph. The scene is awe inspiring and with these small little details you start loving the technical aspects of movie.

7. Life is Beautiful : Life indeed gets more beautiful after watching this movie. Best described here http://by-aj.blogspot.com/2011/04/life-is-beautiful.html

8. Harishcandrachi Factory: One thing you love about Delhi and for that matter a metro city is the film festival that take place. I have seen scores of amazing movies but this is a movie which always etches me on my heart. My brother had recommended me this movie but I had felt what good will it be to watch how Falke started making movies. But I had a pleasant surprise when i saw the protagonist and with the energy he and his wife would come up victorious against all the odds. Without being preachy the movie taught me so so much.

9. Ijajat: आदते भी अजीब होती हैं सांस लेना भी कैसी आदत है , जीए जाना भी क्या रवायत है ,जीए जाते है , जीए जाते हैं.  And many more such dialogues. The songs. Gulzaar . Naseeruddin Shah. Had had many discussions with various people about this movie and everyone has there own take.

10. Mard: In my childhood, I was die hard Amitbah fan. Had attempted writing Mard Ke Seene Mein Dard nahi hota on my chest with dad' shaving blade. Ma negotiated and I ended up writing it with A red pen. The impact it had on me was amazing and I have to add this movie in my list with movies like Sharaabi, Mr Natwarlal, Inderjeet, Shehenshah, Sholay, Toofan and Jadugar as these were the movies I loved watching again and again on television and VCR and grew up with.

These are some  films which I can watch again and again. To add to these there is Udaan, The English Patient, Takshak, The Japanese Wife, Deewar, Abhimaan, Mr and Mrs Iyer , Dabbang. The list no doubt is endless.

Death Sentence...

Recently there was an article in Hindu http://orwell.ru/library/articles/hanging/english/e_hanging This article has  come up on the wake of giving mercy to the killers of Rajiv Gandhi. There has been huge row about forgiving those involved in it. It has been twenty years since Mr Gandhi died and more than 70 years since Mr Orwell wrote the article. Letting these people off the crime they did, seems to be logical amongst various set of society who thinks letting go the criminals is a way forward for an emerging society. Death sentence looks medieval or cruel.  But was the crime (murder) committed a civilized step ? A society that sentences killers to nothing worse than prison -- no matter how depraved the killing or how innocent the victim -- is a society that doesn't *really* think murder is so terrible.  When a killer is hanged till death, society is condemning his crime with a seriousness and intensity that no other punishment achieves. I still remember as a child th...
