WOW and GOW (WomanIyas and Galliya of Wasseypur)


 
In our house Mazarina works, she proudly calls herself   a Pethaan (Pathaan) and rues her destiny for working as a domestic help (what a Pethaan should have never done). She is rash, one the face attitude, witty and full of expletives. She makes me remember Nagma Khatoon. Not fighting for empowerment but empowered.  Not looking for something for her but assuredly and powerfully ensuring her husband’s revenge is complete. Not giving a damn if her husband is cheating but wont share her house. And has even guts to enter a brothel and drive her husband away. And is also concerned he eats nicely so that his “performance” outside the house is not loathed. Lives in penury but won’t accept alms of the enemy. Pride is what defines her. Pride is what I find in both Nagma and Mazarina. Pride is what defines both of them.

Richa Chaddhha , a delhi  girl has picked up the accent fantastically. Local bihari accent is something which would come naturally to Bihari actors (Manoj, Quadri excelling with Quadri bringing Jharkhandi as well quite brilliantly). Even Nawazuddin sounds more of a U.P guy than a bihari or Jharkhandi (his expression “haain “ is so U.P wala ). And Richa picks up Bihaari as she never went beyond Wasseypur in her life. She calling Faizal (phaaizal) is fantastic. Another fan discussed how she looked like the exact age she portrayed from 16 to 60. Her dialogues cuts you. 

Another powerful performance was that of Huma Querieshi aur Mohsina. She is a bollywood addict since childhood; whistles for Amitabh and begs for tickets. She dresses and applies make up like Madhuri and enjoys watching Mamta Kulkarni. For her  watching Saas Bahu serials is more important than romancing her husband who has come after long time. She has her own shares of secrets however she would like her boyfriend to ask for permission before holding hands . She wears same set of aviators like her husband does and that for her is symbolic of their affection. She sits with her husband on discussions and debates and represents her in almost all walks of life. She offers her broad shoulders and sings encouraging songs for him. Huma has portrayed the role with super confidence of a veteran. She aptly represents a muffasil town lady with Bollywood hangover. There are definitely other female characters as well and all portray their roles quite efficiently and you love watching these powerful ladies.
 Another noticeable things was use of expletives. Loads of critics said film is hard to digest because of its language. Well to be precise I did not find any place where slangs were forced. That’s how most of us talk. The use of slangs is more a manifestation of emotions. Faizal did not use expletives until in rage. Delhites use more slangs than what is being used here. Something which irritates me at times is way people laugh at certain usage of slangs. Though I also had problems when people laughed at  certain satirical  and painful plight of Nattha in Peepli Live . Some of the people also thought of film being vulgar because of slangs. But what do u expect  of a person who stabs people in middle of road and butchers them to speak “paak-saaf” language ? 

Acceptance of language of the “kasba bharat" is same as time taken by Nagma adjusting with the refrigerator and Sardaar not getting miffed by Vaccum Cleaner. BTW think how many times we urbanites use the F word and we would find it unacceptable when told in maatribhaasha.

Death Sentence...

Recently there was an article in Hindu http://orwell.ru/library/articles/hanging/english/e_hanging This article has  come up on the wake of giving mercy to the killers of Rajiv Gandhi. There has been huge row about forgiving those involved in it. It has been twenty years since Mr Gandhi died and more than 70 years since Mr Orwell wrote the article. Letting these people off the crime they did, seems to be logical amongst various set of society who thinks letting go the criminals is a way forward for an emerging society. Death sentence looks medieval or cruel.  But was the crime (murder) committed a civilized step ? A society that sentences killers to nothing worse than prison -- no matter how depraved the killing or how innocent the victim -- is a society that doesn't *really* think murder is so terrible.  When a killer is hanged till death, society is condemning his crime with a seriousness and intensity that no other punishment achieves.
